1) Ustaz Dr Firdaus Bin Yahya
Ustaz Firdaus is founder and manager of Darul Huffaz Learning Centre (www.darulhuffaz.sg) specializing in Quranic studies. Apart from that, he is also the webmaster of Singapore’s Past Ulama (www.ibnyahya.com), which showcases the life history and significant contributions of our past religious scholars in Singapore.
He took his GCE “O” Levels at Temasek Secondary School in 1987. Although he was eligible to join Temasek Junior College, he switched field and study at Madrasah Aljunied Al-Islamiah. While at the Madrasah, he took his GCE “A” Levels in 1990 and was eligible for a Science undergraduate course at National University of Singapore. He decided to stay on at the Madrasah and completed his studies there in 1992.
Although he was accepted for a degree course at the Islamic University in Medina, Saudi Arabia, he decided to study at the renowned Al-Azhar University in Egypt. He obtained his BA from that university in 1996 in Arabic Language and Literature. While at the University, he spent his three summers getting a Cambridge Diploma in Computer studies from the University of Cambridge in 1994, and completing a certificate course in Islamic Astronomy at Kolej Ugama Sultan Zainal Abidin at Terengganu, obtaining the Best Student Award in Islamic Astronomy.
Immediately after obtaining his Degree, he pursued a diploma course in tahfiz Al-Quran and Qira’at at Ma’ahad Tahfiz Al-Qur’an wal Qiraat Johor Bahru and completed his memorisation in 1.5 years. He took his Diploma in Tahfiz Al-Quran wal Qiraat from Darul Quran JAKIM in 1998 and became the first Singaporean graduate.
From 1999 to 2001, he worked as an Executive Officer in the newly opened Office of Mufti at the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis), a statutory board and the authority on Islamic matters in Singapore. He was tasked to open up the Tahfiz Learning Centre of Singapore at Kg Siglap Mosque’s premise in 1999.
He left Muis in 2002 to pursue a Masters Degree in Al-Quran and Sunnah at the International Islamic University Malaysia and successfully completed it in 2005.
From 2006 to 2008, he worked as Head Darul Quran at Masjid Kg Siglap. He was tasked to revamp the tahfiz programmes there. He introduced a new system of memorisation that has been said to be quite effective, and several tahfiz programmes that are still on-going at the Mosque such as the Sijil Tahfiz and Tahfiz Express.
He left the Mosque to pursue his Doctoral studies at International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC) at Malaysia concentrating in the field of Islamic Science.
Even while pursuing his academic aspirations, Ustaz Firdaus Yahya was actively involved in many aspects of the religious activities in Singapore and the region. He is a member of Singapore Islamic Scholars and Religious Teachers Association (Pergas) since 1996 served in various capacities as Vice Secretary, Secretary and Vice President. He also volunteered at Sekolah Ugama Radin Mas from 2009 to 2010 and assisted in setting up the system for its full-time tahfiz programme.
He wrote several books in the field of Quran and Islamic Inheritance (Faraidh). He assisted Muis in training imams and khatibs, zakat officers and developing the Guide to Muslim Consumption in 2004. He was a member of the Singapore Muis Halal Standard (SMHS) Committee and Muis Council. Currently, he sits in the Fatwa Committee, Joint Madrasah System Committee and Quran Steering Committee.
2) Ustaz Muhammad Yunus Bin Farouk Piperdy
Ustaz Yunus completed his Al-Quranul Kariim memorization in the year 2009 under the guidance of Maulana Yaacob Vadia @ Jamiyah Singapore. He completed his O’ Levels in 2002 in Temasek Secondary and pursued his studies in Temasek polytechnic and graduated with a Diploma in Mechatronics majoring in Aerospace Engineering with an overall GPA of 3.8 in July 2006 and attained a Merit and outstanding Certificate from Temasek Polytechnic. He started the memorization of Quranul Kariim in early 2006 while pursuing his final year in the Aerospace industry.
Ustaz Yunus had to juggle his time between his Islamic & academic studies. He started his Al-Quran memorization when he was 19 and with Allah’s grace, he completed his Quranic memorisation successfully in 2009 while serving his National Service. While memorizing the Quran, he has represented Singapore in a number of International Quranic Memorization World Competition that was held in Asian Countries and the Middle East and has achieved numerous awards for his participation in the events. They are :
- 5th in World for Quranic Memorization in the Category of 1-6 Juzuk held at Cairo, Egypt in the year 2006.
- Consolation award in World for Quranic Memorization in the category of 1-10 Juzuk held at Mekkah Al-Mukarramah,Saudi Arabia in the Year
- 4th in Asean Countries for Quranic Memorization in the category of 1-15 juzuk held at Jakarta, Indonesia in the Year 2008.
- 4th in Asean and European Countries for Quranic Memorization in the category of 1-20 Juzuk held at Jakarta,Indonesia in year 2010.
Ustaz Yunus attended Islamic classes regularly, particularly classes and Tafsir classes of the late Al-Marhum Ustaz Syed Abdillah Bin Ahmad Al-Jufri, Fiqh classes of the late Sheikh Umar Al-Khatib, and many other classes that was conducted by renowned scholars of Singapore. He also attended personal Arabic class and mainly the reading of Imam Al-Ghazali and Imam jalaluddin As-Sayuthi books with the Late Ustaz Mohamed Feer, a very well-known Arabic Scholar of Singapore.
After his completion of Al-Quran memorization in 2009, he was appointed the part-time Imam of Abdul Aleem As-Siddique Mosque located at Lor K Telok Kurau and as the Main Imam to conduct Teraweeh prayers at that mosque and khatam the Holy Quran in the Month of Ramadhan during the teraweeh prayers.
Ustaz Yunus has been giving private tuition for Maths & Science subjects ever since completing his O’Levels. In the year 2010, he opened up a tuition centre, Lighthouse Tuition Centre, where he teaches the two subjects on weekdays along with tahfiz during weekends. His passion for teaching was featured in the local Malay newspaper, Berita Harian. In the year 2011, he was awarded ’2011 Successful Entrepreneur (Platinum Category)’ for his achievement.
3) Za’iem Al-Hadi Bin Sallim
Za’iem completed his Al-Quran memorization in the year 2006 at Darul Quran Singapore @ Kampung Siglap Mosque. After successfully completing his O’levels in Temasek Secondary School in the year 1997, he pursued his education in Temasek Polytechnic & graduated with Diploma In Business.
While undergoing his academic school, Za’iem had to juggle his time between his Islamic & academic studies. He started his Al-Quran memorization since Secondary 3 & upon following the advice of his teacher, Ustaz Firdaus Bin Yahya, he joined the Tahfiz Programme in Darul Quran Singapore as the first cohort of students in which prior to that, he has successfully completed 7 juzuk memorization of the Quran.
He attended Islamic classes regularly, particularly classes of his father, Ustaz Sallim Bin Jasman, and Tafsir & Fiqh classes of the late Al-Marhum Ustaz Syed Abdillah Bin Ahmad Al-Jufri. He also attended Arabic classes & completed the 5 years of part-time Islamic course from Pergas with Certificate in Islamic Studies (Sijil Pengajian Islam Pergas – SPI). After his completion of Al-Quran memorization in 2006, he started his teaching journey by teaching tahfiz Al-Quran for a year in 2007 at Ar-Rabitah Mosque. Besides that, Za’iem also studied Islamic treatment of spiritual disturbances & sihr (black magic) under the guidance of Ustaz Prof. Dr.Jumadi Bin Mustar for a few years and was granted permission from his teacher to conduct healing/treatment sessions.
Za’iem has also been active in volunteering work ever since he was a youth. He was a member of the Syabab youth wing of Kampung Siglap Mosque during his schooling years. He gained a lot of learning experiences especially from his senior peers who helped & guided him on managing & conducting programmes for youth development like motivational workshops, camps & self-development.
Za’iem is also the founder and webmaster of a an Islamic website, www.CeramahIslam.com, which was launched in the year 2004. Alhamdulillah, with the grace and help from Allah, the website has been beneficial to many people especially to local Singaporean Muslims.
In the year 2008, he left for Cairo, Egypt, with his wife to continue with their Arabic studies. Alhamdulillah, on top of that they were blessed with an invaluable experience to be able to study personally with Syeikh Dr. Muhammad Syed Shufti, an Egyptian scholar from Al-Azhar University. Besides studying, Za’iem also allocated his time to help out in treating students with spiritual disturbances. He was also invited to give a talk at the Students’ Assembly House of Johor @ Hayyu Raba’ah, Cairo, on the dangers of spiritual disturbances & sihr (black magic) and ways to overcome them according to the Quran & Sunnah.
Upon returning to Singapore from Cairo in 2010, Za’iem continued with his teaching of tahfiz Al-Quran at Sekolah Tahfiz Ugama Radin Mas from August 2010 to April 2011, and is presently still teaching the subject at Darul Quran Singapore & Darul Huffaz Learning Centre. He is also a freelance online marketer specializing in web services like web hosting, web design & development of wordpress websites.
